Restore local snapshot

Local snapshot restore in Portworx Backup allows users to recover data quickly within the same cluster where the snapshot was originally created. Unlike full backup restores, local snapshot restores leverage on-cluster storage snapshots to provide fast recovery times without transferring large volumes of data.

Key Features of Local Snapshot Restore

  • Fast Recovery Time: local snapshots reside on the same storage system as the original workload, eliminating the need for external data transfers. Ideal for rapid rollback scenarios or restoring individual applications.

  • Storage Efficiency: Since snapshots are stored incrementally, they consume less space compared to full backups. Restore operations do not require moving large datasets.

  • Cluster-specific restore: local snapshots can only be restored within the same Kubernetes cluster where they were created. Cross-cluster restores require a full backup restore instead of a snapshot restore.

  • Namespace and PVC Mapping: restores can be mapped to a different namespace within the same cluster. Persistent Volume Claims (PVCs) must have sufficient storage available for successful restoration.

  • Retention Policy Compliance: snapshot retention policies define how long snapshots remain available for restore. Ensure that the snapshot exists within its configured retention period before attempting a restore.
