Concepts
The PDS platform offers a comprehensive suite of tools designed to simplify and optimize the management of data services. This chapter delves into the main user interface (UI) components within the PDS platform, explaining how each component functions and how they interconnect to create a cohesive system for managing clusters, data services, backups, cloud credentials, projects, and access.

📄️ Clusters
Clusters, which represent your Kubernetes clusters, are the foundational units within the PDS platform. They consist of groups of servers, often referred to as instances, that work together to manage, store, and process data. This collaborative approach enables clusters to provide high availability, scalability, and fault tolerance for the data services running on them.
📄️ Data services
Data Services in the PDS platform encompass various applications that can be deployed, managed, and scaled according to application needs. These services form the backbone of application data storage and management, ensuring data integrity, availability, and performance.
📄️ Backups
Backups are a critical aspect of data management, ensuring that data is protected against loss, corruption, or accidental deletion. The PDS platform offers robust backup solutions to safeguard data services. By automating the backup process and providing flexible storage options, PDS helps ensure data integrity and availability.
📄️ Cloud credentials
Cloud credentials are a vital component within the Portworx Data Services (PDS) platform, facilitating secure and efficient interaction with various cloud service providers. These credentials enable PDS to perform essential operations such as provisioning resources, storing backups, and executing other cloud-based tasks. Managing cloud credentials effectively ensures seamless integration with cloud environments and enhances the overall functionality of the PDS platform.
📄️ Projects
Projects in the PDS platform are a powerful feature for organizing resources and managing user access. Each project serves as a container that can include its own set of clusters, namespace, templates, backup locations, data services, and users. This separation allows organizations to isolate environments, control access, and manage resources effectively, which is particularly useful in multi-tenant environments or for teams working on distinct projects.
📄️ Access
The Access administration in the PDS platform is a critical component for managing user access and permissions. It ensures that only authorized users can perform specific actions, thereby maintaining security and operational integrity within the platform. Access Manager provides a centralized way to control who has access to what resources and what operations they can perform.
📄️ Account
An account in the PDS platform is the top-level entity created by Portworx for each customer. It serves as the parent structure under which organizations and projects are organized. Unlike user-generated entities, accounts are provisioned directly by Portworx and are not accessible for users to create or modify.
📄️ Organization
The PDS platform includes Organization administration to provide you with a structured way to manage resources, projects, and permissions within distinct organizations. This feature enables users to create and manage organizations directly through the interface, allowing for better segmentation of teams, clusters, and data service deployments. Organization is particularly useful for enterprises with multiple teams or business units that require isolated resources and varied access controls.
